Short Description
The osteological collection at the Natural History Museum in Vienna comprises about 40,000 human skeletal remains of mainly Austrian but also worldwide provenance. It therefore allows various research questions to be answered in systematic and comparative ways. It was founded 150 years ago and reflects the history of the collection as well as of the field itself. The oldest remains date to the upper Paleolithic (ca 38.000 years), while the youngest ones ones are dated to the modern era. They represent the basis for the study of lifeways in ancient and historic times.
