Complexity Science Hub (CSH)

Wien | Website

Open for Collaboration

Short Description

The Complexity Science Hub (CSH) is Europe's scientific center for the study of complex systems. Driven by the growing need for a deep understanding of the interconnections underlying our society – from healthcare to supply chains – the CSH aims to derive meaningful insights from data for the benefit of society.

In the context of complex challenges – such as the impacts of climate change or the fight against cybercrime – it is necessary to process large amounts of data and generate precise, reliable information from these data. The CSH develops methodological approaches that enable the analysis of how systems respond to various changes. The aim of this research is to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms of complex systems and thus contribute to the development of sustainable solutions.

Research Services

The science of complex systems combines mathematical and physical principles with concepts borrowed from biology and the social sciences. It is dedicated to topics such as robustness / resilience / efficiency, innovation systems, urban development, transport, financial markets, supply chain management, medicine, network theory, sustainability, agent-based simulation of complex systems, quantitative social sciences, e-governance (public participation) and the study of systemic risk in general.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

Each researcher has a breadth of expertise – most often a disciplinary specialization (e.g., sociology, economics, medicine) in addition to physics, computation, and/or applied mathematics. A unifying foundation is the language of complexity science—a methodological framework comprising computational, mathematical, data-analytic, and modeling approaches.

CSH research enables a new perspective on the world—viewing it as dynamic, interconnected, and co-evolving networks. This approach allows for a deeper understanding of complex systems and the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. Such knowledge makes it possible to generate well-founded predictions about how complex systems will behave under changing conditions and to develop realistic measures to positively influence them for the benefit of society.
