Short Description
The research@ZaB enables research at highest level not just on all challenges related to tunnel and underground constructions such as further development of existing and the generation of new underground tunneling methods, but also special research questions of all kinds of industry. It enables the use and testing of new materials and equipment as well as the use of alternative tunnel ventilation systems. There are also completely new perspectives for the entire safety technology, including the extinguishing systems integrated in the tunnel. Within the scope of a large-scale EU-project, also possibilities for underground energy storage are explored at Zentrum am Berg (ZaB). As a consequence, the University of Leoben also provides a sustainable political impulse for Upper Styria and especially for the region of Eisenerz.

Research Services
With ZaB, we offer a full-scale underground infrastructure including ventilation technology and other common equipment elements of road and railway tunnels with a length of several hundred metres for research and development projects that would be difficult to implement above ground. The ZaB is connected via a 5G network; a total of 1.65 MW is available at the ZaB.
