Short Description

The new installed scanning electron microscope (SEM) JEOL IT-300 LV at the Institute of Nonferrous Metallurgy/University of Leoben is a tungsten-filament based unit with high- and low vacuum mode (up to 650 Pa for low conductive materials) and is equipped with a large chamber and heavy duty stage for samples up to 200 mm in diameter and 2 kg in weight as well as a lock for fast sample charging.

The SEM is combined with a last generation-type of 50mm² energy dispersive X-Ray detector (EDX/EDS) from Oxford Instruments, which allows spot-scans and mappings with high scanning rates and resolutions at short operation time.

A really outstanding feature of this unit is the heating stage from Kammrath & Weiss with a maximum reachable temperature of 1500°C, 5K/min heating rate and approx. 10x10x3 mm specimen size for in-situ-investigations on different research areas like e.g. materials science or recycling of complex secondary raw materials.

Research Services

material analysis, failure analysis, characterisation of complex (secondary) raw materials and residues

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

This unit is used for material science, damage analyses as well as characterisation of various raw-, recycling- and residue materials. The tasks vary from simple surface imaging over spot-scans and mappings up to heating stage experiments.
