Short Description

The BIOLOG Odin VIII™ system for phenotypic characterisation and/or identification is the first of its kind in Austria. The instrument is designed to perform phenotypic microarray assays to characterise bacteria, yeasts and fungi as well as to perform analyses to profile microbial communities. It can additionally be used to identify gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacterial species, anaerobes, yeasts and filamentous fungi, but requires additional database (not available at the moment).

The system includes the following components:
1. Odin VIII Instrument used to incubate and measure absorbance data from up to 8 microplates at a time.
2. Dedicated Windows computer with installed Odin software.
3. Software application installed on the computer, that controls Odin, and processes and analyzes the data.
4. Turbidimeter instrument with power adaptor, used to measure inoculum cell density.

Research Services

The Institute for Natural Sciences and Technology in the Arts (INTK) and the Core Facility "Centre for Material Sciences in Art and Conservation (ZMKK)" are central facilities of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna for the natural scientific (material) analysis of works of art. The facilities support members of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna or other research institutions, museums, libraries, archives, etc. in the realisation of joint projects within the framework of research funding or contract research and also offers services (third-party funding) for external parties.
The focus is on scientific material analyses of artworks and archive materials using FTIR, Raman, XRF, UV-Vis, HSI, RSI, ESEM (EDX), Py-GC/MS, digital X-ray radiography and photo documentation (Vis, UV, IR, IRR), (3D) microscopy, chambers for accelerated ageing of samples, and microbiology in the art.

Special services with the BIOLOG Odin VIII:

- Investigation of microbial growth kinetics of isolated strains as well as mixed microbial communities colonising art and cultural heritage objects.
- Phenotyping (of isolates and mixed microbial communities) on a wide range of substrates or inhibitors, which can be used to optimize growth conditions or compare phenotypes of different strains. This provides valuable data that complement genomic and proteomic technologies.
- Screening of the metabolic capabilities of the colonizing organisms to infer the potential to degrade different materials, as well as their resistance/sensitivity to certain inhibitors/biocides

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

The BIOLOG Odin VIII system complements the INTK range of methods in important respects. It enables phenotyping of microbes and/or microbial communities by screening hundreds or even thousands of different substrates and growth conditions in a controlled environment. The Odin VIII allows temperature adjustment and loading of up to eight plates, as well as measurement, collection and analysis of data from the loaded plates. The results provide insight into the metabolic capabilities expressed by micro-organisms or microbial communities colonising materials and thus enable their degradation potential, or resistance to various biocides, to be elucidated.

Terms of Use

In general, the analyses are carried out by employees of the Institute for Natural Sciences and Technology in the Arts (INTK) / Centre for Materials Science in Art and Conservation (ZMKK) of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. However, it is also possible for members of other universities with relevant training and under certain conditions to use the equipment to carry out analyses within research projects after instruction and successful completion of a course.
