Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

Rapid Resolution Liquid Chromatography (RRLC) allows both fast (minute range) and ultra-fast separations (seconds range) with short columns as well as high-resolution separations with correspondingly long columns.
One of the core features of the RRLC, besides optimizing the LC instrumentation (for example with regard to pressure and dead volume), is the use of extremely small particle sizes (2 microns). For small particles, the mass transfer between and in the particles is optimized by a reduction of the diffusion paths so that the highest separation step numbers, ie the lowest peak widths, can be achieved. Separation capacities of 12,000 trays and more for 50 mm long columns are reality and correspond to the separation efficiency of a 150 mm long column packed with 5 μm particles.
