Short Description

The famous public displays, in five large exhibition halls (I-V), comprise about 15% of the total collection and show aesthetic and scientifically valuable minerals, ores, gemstones, rocks (including decorative and building stones) as well as meteorites and impactites (including tektites) collected over more than 500 years.

Research Services

Determination of minerals, gemstones, precious stones, imitations and synthetic gemstones, rocks and meteorites possible on request, depending on various conditions.
Expert opinions of gemstones, precious stones, minerals, artefacts (fee applies).
Help concerning historical research.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

The employees of the department of mineralogy and petrography have expertise in the determination of minerals, gemstones, precious stones, rocks and meteorites. A large variety of analytical methods are used.

Access to scientists during working hours (Mo-Fr, 9 am - 4 pm) after prior appointment.
