Short Description

The DNA and tissue collection of the NHM Vienna has existed since 1993 and currently comprises more than 30,000 samples of animal organisms, most of which are stored in ultra-low freezers at -80 ° C. 2/3 of the samples consist of tissue stored in 80% EtOH, 1/3 are DNA samples. The collection has a particularly large number of samples from groups of organisms that have been treated in projects of the Central Research Laboratories in recent years (Reptilia, Gastropoda, Mammalia, Aves, Amphibians and Insecta).

The DNA and tissue collection also contains samples taken from a wide variety of objects from other NHM collections especially for DNA analyzes, and in this way links and supplements them. The genetic information of biodiversity is archived in a DNA and tissue collection.

The samples are recorded in a database and can be made available for scientific research.

Research Services

DNA and tissue samples can be made available for scientific projects.
Comprehensively documented samples (including taxonomic determination and geographical data) that have a collection permits and are related to a specimen in a public collection can be deposited.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

DNA extraction, measurement of DNA concentration, taking sample material from objects under clean room conditions, recording in the database

Allocation to research infrastructure
