Short Description

The Agilent 7890 GC system in combination with an Agilent 7010 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer enables the robust detection of volatile and semi-volatile compounds in matrix-loaded samples with mid/endpoint backflush down to the femtogram range. Unknown substances can be identified and quantified down to the ppb range using various ionisation techniques (EI and CI) and derivatisation methods in individually adapted methods.

Research Services

Core areas are the development of analytical methods for in-process optimization during product development, the quantification of volatile and semi-volatile target compounds (e.g. active pharmaceutical ingredients) and their degradation products, suitability testing of packaging materials and polymer-based raw materials, extractables/leachables screenings in the pharmaceutical sector, residual solvent measurements and the analysis of product-specific flavors and off-flavors.

The use of different detection methods allows the evaluation of quantitative analysis results, especially for untargeted screenings and the associated multivariate data analysis.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

The GC-MS/MS system is used to quantify target compounds with particularly low detection limits. Based on previous results, e.g. extraction studies, sensitive methods for the target analyses are established and validated in-house.

Existing methods include
- Leachables in pharmaceutical products, packaging and process materials
- Contaminants, pharmacologically active substances or hormones in environmental samples
- Terpenes and terpenoids or their metabolites in biological samples
