Short Description
aks Wissenschaft is the central research unit of aks gesundheit GmbH and provides a comprehensive, high-quality epidemiological research infrastructure for the federal state of Vorarlberg. Its core components— the Vorarlberg Cancer Registry, the aks Health Data Database, scientific evaluations and participatory research—form the evidence base for public health research, prevention and strategic health planning.
The Vorarlberg Cancer Registry has continuously recorded all malignant neoplasms since the 1970s, following international IARC standards. Systematic case documentation, coding and regular data exchange with Statistics Austria ensure valid incidence, mortality and survival data for research, reporting and healthcare planning.
The aks Health Data Database is one of the most extensive population-based health data resources in Central Europe. It integrates long-term data from preventive programmes, vaccinations and school health examinations. Ongoing record linkage, quality assurance and updates enable robust analyses of long-term health trends, risk factors and regional differences. aks Wissenschaft is accredited as a scientific institution with access to the Austrian Micro Data Center (AMDC) until 2029.
A key function of this research infrastructure is its internal use within the organisation: epidemiological data and evaluation results directly support the development, refinement and quality assurance of health promotion and prevention programmes across the aks gesundheit GmbH. Furthermore, analyses and insights are shared with municipalities, schools, healthcare providers, social organisations and other regional partners, facilitating collaborative development of health-promoting environments.
Through this integrated approach, aks Wissenschaft provides an essential evidence base not only for health policy, but also for the general population and institutions across the region, strengthening public health capacity and supporting informed, data-driven action.

Research Services
The aks Wissenschaft research infrastructure provides the following research services to internal and external partners:
- Provision of epidemiological datasets (e.g., cancer registry data, regional health data; subject to legal requirements)
- Epidemiological analyses (incidence, trends, mortality, survival analysis)
- Record linkage and data integration in compliance with strict data protection and quality standards
- Statistical analyses and biostatistical consulting
- Evaluation of health promotion and prevention programmes (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods)
- Public health analysis and research support
- Participatory research formats (Photovoice, co-research, Participatory Action Research)
- Scientific consulting and methodological support for research projects and academic work
Services that cannot be offered directly due to legal or regulatory constraints can be assessed individually in a preliminary consultation.
Interested institutions and organizations are invited to contact aks Wissenschaft for further information or cooperation inquiries.
Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure
The research infrastructure of aks Wissenschaft combines the Vorarlberg Cancer Registry, the comprehensive regional health data repository and established evaluation systems to form a robust basis for epidemiological and public health research. Core methodological competencies include epidemiology, biostatistics, record linkage, health data analytics, and survival and trend analyses, all conducted according to international quality standards (IARC, WHO). Additional expertise includes qualitative research, mixed-methods approaches, and participatory research methods such as Photovoice and Participatory Action Research.
The team’s expertise spans epidemiology, medicine, public health, statistics and qualitative social sciences. The infrastructure is used for internal quality and programme development in health promotion as well as for collaborative research with external institutions. It supports data-driven analysis, evidence-based decision-making and interdisciplinary cooperation across sectors.
Requests concerning access, data usage or potential research collaborations are assessed individually and clarified during a preliminary consultation, taking into account all legal, data protection and organisational requirements.
Institutions, organisations or companies interested in using the infrastructure or collaborating on research are invited to get in touch:
Any provision of data or analytical services is carried out exclusively within the applicable legal framework (e.g., GDPR, Cancer Registry Act, Statistics Act) and after evaluation of scientific and data protection requirements.
