Short Description

Trailer for transporting the mobile weather radar

One goes to the investigation area and looks for a location which allows a free overview as far as possible.
There the trailer is positioned, the radar is extended with the scissor jack and put into operation. Likewise, the basic meteorology is put into operation on the measuring mast of the trailer. When the radar is running and the data transmissions are up, the additional mobile measuring units are distributed in the area. One returns to the location of the radar. In the towing vehicle, the necessary analyses are carried out on site and in the case of larger projects, data are transmitted to partners.

Other missions run similarly, but are always adapted to the topographical conditions.
It is always important to look for a location with a clear view in order to enable the 3-dimensional measurements of the radar. By the adjustment possibilities of the radar scans, one can adapt to the conditions. Due to the separate towing vehicle, one is very flexible in the area.

Part of DCNA's mobile research lab

The trailer is part of DCNA's mobile research laboratory which was purchased through the HRSM project funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) and developed together with DCNA’s founding universities (Graz University of Technology and BOKU University). The lab is intended to promote research in the field (i.e., directly at the disaster site). It is available to researchers and enables them to provide their expertise locally and promptly in the event of a disaster. Individual elements are also used in exercises and research projects.

The mobile research laboratory currently consists of a lab bus, a pick-up truck and a trailer for transporting the necessary equipment and technology. This includes information and communication modules, lab and analysis workstations as well as all the basic technical equipment that is necessary for efficient operation in the field. Furthermore, the mobile lab also includes a ground-based robot with cameras and fire sensors that can navigate independently (“Husky” robotics platform), and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a laser scanner and a regular and thermal imaging camera (“Matador” drone).

In order to ensure that the lab can be used even in difficult conditions, a self-sufficient power supply is guaranteed. The mobile research lab can be used, among other things, to monitor landslides around residential areas or to effectively assess dangers and risks along railway and motorway routes.
