Short Description

The NanoZoomer S60 whole-slide image scanner from Hamamatsu enables the digitization of microscopic sections. The resulting digital images (file format: .ndpi) can be viewed with suitable viewing software and used for computer-aided analysis.

The scanner supports brightfield scanning at 20× (image resolution: 0.46 µm/pixel) and 40× magnification (image resolution: 0.23 µm/pixel). It can be loaded with up to 60 slides sized 25–26 × 75–76 mm. According to the manufacturer, the scan time per tissue area of 15 × 15 mm is 60 seconds at 20× and 75 seconds at 40× magnification. Scanning in multiple z-planes (Z-stacks) is possible.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

The scanner is integrated into the pathology unit, where it is used to digitize microscopic samples (in particular histological and immunohistochemical specimens) for various research projects. The digital images are used by several research groups to extract quantitative data from the microscopy images. One group focuses on the development and validation of AI-assisted image analysis algorithms.
