The strategic development of research infrastructures and infrastructures for the development and exploitation of the arts (EEK) is an important field of action of the Austrian Research, Technology and Innovation Strategy 2030 (RTI Strategy) in order to catch up with the international leaders and strengthen Austria as an RTI location.

Research infrastructures support researchers at Austrian universities in tackling challenging issues and opening up new areas of research, such as cloud computing or quantum computing. They are instruments for excellent research (e.g. HPC), research-led teaching, training young talent (e.g. digital medicine) as well as for profile building, knowledge transfer, social innovation and, in particular, for overcoming the challenges of the digital transformation.

As part of the competitive call for proposals “(Digital) Research Infrastructure”, the BMFWF and the EU jointly invested €40 million in the expansion, access and modernization of existing as well as the acquisition of new high-quality (digital) research infrastructures at Austrian universities. The funding is being provided in cooperation with the Recovery and Resilience Facility of the EU (RRF). Some of the projects in the call for proposals have not yet been completed.
