IIASA is an international scientific institute that takes an interdisciplinary approach to examine the complex interdependencies between natural, social, and technological systems (systems analysis) and conduct solutions-oriented research in areas such as energy transitions, food and water security, population dynamics, biodiversity, and economic development.
It is governed by Member Organizations that come from Europe, Asia/Pacific, North America, Africa and the Middle East. Austria is a founding member and represented by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), with the Austrian IIASA Committee serving as the organizational body responsible for all matters related to IIASA.

IIASA’s research is currently organized under six research programs.
Advancing systems analysis (ASA) program builds on IIASA's legacy in operations research, optimization, and systems analysis, leveraging natural and social sciences, various data sources, machine learning, and engagement with policy to deliver impactful outcomes for stakeholders. Its methodologies now encompass game theory, complexity science, data science, and machine learning, alongside transdisciplinary approaches and horizon scanning.
Biodiversity and natural resources (BNR) program is globally recognized for its expertise in driving global and regional systems transformations toward sustainable integrated biosphere management.
Energy, climate and environment (ECE) program focuses on energy systems, this program provides impactful research in energy transitions, environmental pollution management, and sustainability.
Economic frontiers (EF) program focuses on pushing economics beyond mainstream analysis, leveraging rigorous principles and methods of economics beyond pragmatic “toolbox” applications and has developed three major modeling frameworks which address social, economic and environmental challenges, and applied them in several contexts.
Population and just societies (POPJUS) program integrates population dynamics, social balance, and fairness into systems analysis, supporting evidence-based policymaking for sustainable and just societies. It excels in analyzing social, economic and spatial heterogeneity in areas like resilience, migration, and education.
