Experimental sciences require a large amount of organizational background work for smooth operation. For example, experimentation often requires specialized instrumentation that needs to be maintained in good condition to ensure maximum efficiency. Furthermore, experimental procedures, operational safety standards and waste disposal procedures must meet official requirements. Finally, some aspects of laboratory work can be easily centralized, taking workload of the scientists and making more efficient use of equipment and reagents. Within specific fields of practical sciences (e.g. life sciences) both basic instrumentation needs and legal constraints are often overlapping between individual scientists opening the possibility to provide an efficient common support infrastructure. In addition, some infrastructure services are required in all experimental fields, like for example supply with technical gases. Here, again, a common infrastructure helps to ensure efficient non-redundant processes.
The Lab Support Facility (LSF) supports the scientific needs of all wet lab researchers on campus. The Life Science Support (LSS) focus on the particular needs of the groups active in the life science while the Physical Science Support (PSS) concentrate on the requirements in experimental chemistry and physics. More specific needs of individual research labs are covered by the Service Facilities Aquatics, Cleaning and Media Kitchen, Mass Spectrometry, Molecular Biology Service, and Plants.

Die experimentellen Wissenschaften erfordern für einen reibungslosen Ablauf ein hohes Maß an organisatorischer Hintergrundarbeit. So sind für Experimente oft spezielle Instrumente erforderlich, die in gutem Zustand gehalten werden müssen, um maximale Effizienz zu gewährleisten. Darüber hinaus müssen Versuchsverfahren, betriebliche Sicherheitsstandards und Abfallentsorgungsverfahren den behördlichen Anforderungen entsprechen. Schließlich können einige Aspekte der Laborarbeit leicht zentralisiert werden, wodurch die Wissenschaftler entlastet und Geräte und Reagenzien effizienter genutzt werden können. In bestimmten Bereichen der praktischen Wissenschaften (z. B. Biowissenschaften) überschneiden sich häufig sowohl der grundlegende Gerätebedarf als auch die rechtlichen Auflagen für die einzelnen Wissenschaftler, was die Möglichkeit eröffnet, eine effiziente gemeinsame Unterstützungsinfrastruktur bereitzustellen. Darüber hinaus werden einige Infrastrukturdienste in allen experimentellen Bereichen benötigt, wie zum Beispiel die Versorgung mit technischen Gasen. Auch hier hilft eine gemeinsame Infrastruktur, um effiziente, nicht redundante Prozesse zu gewährleisten.

Der Life Science Support (LSS) konzentriert sich auf die besonderen Bedürfnisse der in den Biowissenschaften tätigen Gruppen, während der Physical Science Support (PSS) sich auf die Anforderungen der experimentellen Chemie und Physik konzentriert. Speziellere Bedürfnisse einzelner Forschungslabors werden von den Serviceeinrichtungen Aquatics, Cleaning and Media Kitchen, Mass Spec, Molecular Biology Service und Plants abgedeckt.
