Short Description

The RiCOPTER is a high-performance unmanned multirotor aerial vehicle (UAV) from the Austrian company RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems, which was developed specifically for professional surveying and laser scanning applications. The robust frame is made of carbon fibre and features retractable rotor arms and a shock-absorbing landing gear for take-offs and landings. The maximum take-off weight for the standard version is under 25 kg, whilst it can carry a sensor payload of up to 6.5 kg. Flight time is up to 30 minutes, depending on the payload, and the cruising speed is 6 to 8 m/s. The RiCOPTER is optimally designed for the integration of the [RIEGL VUX-SYS] laser scanner (such as the VUX-1UAV) as well as additional RGB, infrared or thermal imaging cameras. It is used in archaeology and for surveying towns and building sites.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure

The RiCOPTER serves as a supplementary sensor system to the terrestrial multi-sensor robotic system developed as part of the heritageROSS project. The two high-precision 3D laser scanning systems can be used in a complementary manner. Furthermore, in post-disaster situations, the RiCOPTER is particularly well-suited for mission planning for the multi-sensor robot platform, for supporting emergency services, and for providing reference scans for monitoring tasks.
