Short Description

The Institute of Energy Systems and Thermodynamics, within the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at TU Wien, focuses its research on "optimization" and "digital twins", among other things. The aim is to develop an innovative distributed energy system. Technologies (such as fuel cells, heat pumps, energy storage, PV, wind, as well as a partial production process, etc.) are to be combined into an overall system and networked using modern process control technology. This will create the basis for future-oriented research in the field of sector coupling. It will be possible to investigate different aspects of sector coupling, regardless of the field of application, such as hydrogen-based technologies, renewable energy supply, conversion, storage and distribution.

In addition, the coupling of all energy sources (electricity, heat, renewable gas) and sectors (industry, mobility, buildings) can be realized. The TU Wien distributed energy system will enable the testing and validation of new optimization and integration approaches. An energy management system enables data acquisition into the optimization unit, to adapt models in order to derive statements for the system behavior of future requirements in real time: Keyword digital twin. A complete hydrogen laboratory system with all the necessary individual components was installed for this purpose.

Research Services

The hydrogen laboratory at TU Wien is dedicated to the research, development and optimization of hydrogen-based energy systems. It enables the testing and validation of models for the generation, storage, conversion and use of hydrogen. Through integration into the distributed energy system, innovative optimization strategies can be investigated. The laboratory also enables real-time data analysis and model adaptation using a digital twin. In this way, it contributes to the further development of sector coupling and sustainable energy supply.
